Winning Habits of Serving Leaders, Part 3: Confidence

Ever since our daughter entered middle school a few years ago, my wife and I have been going to the Student Life worship service at our church in order to hear and experience the same message as her. We have some wonderful pastors and a lot of great students involved with the ministry.

Each week, a group of high school students leads the music portion of the service with our Student Life music minister. I have seen some of the students start out very timid as performers and then blossom into powerhouse singers and musicians. It is really awesome to see.

I recall a time when the music team came back on stage after the sermon to do the closing worship song. One of the girls in the band was singing lead. I have seen her sing before and she is really good. But, on this occasion, she started out very tentative. Her voice was barely audible, despite the microphone in front of her. I honestly was not sure she was going to make it through.

But then something amazing happened. She hit what must have been a difficult note for her and a look of confidence came over her face. Her voice gained strength and texture. The quality of her performance increased dramatically. She grew stronger and stronger through the rest of the song, almost to diva proportions! And when she finished, the other singer on stage came over and gave her a high five to celebrate.

WOW!

I literally saw her go from 0-60 right in front of me!

Have you ever been like that in school, an organization, work, or business? You start out tentative and it does not seem like you are going to make it?

What do you do? Do you give up? Or do you keep going and pick up momentum until you achieve the final goal?

I sincerely hope you don’t give up! Once you have taken those initial steps, you can gain great strides toward the finish line that you are trying to achieve. Many people snatch defeat from the jaws of victory because they quit right before the race is won.

In everything you do, push through to the end. Someone is waiting to give you a high-five when you win!

This message is about confidence. Studies show that confidence is the most desired trait that employers look for in an employee, that people look for in a mate, and that leads to a long life. Serving leaders are confident that when they put others first and lead from an attitude of service that the best things will happen for their group or organization.
