One Minute Student Leadership Update Video: The Two Most Important Words
The two most powerful words for any member of a campus club or organization are “I move.” Whether it is student government, the programming board, Circle K, the Gamers Club, or any other group, “I move” is where it all begins.
It is how members get their say. It is how they let everyone else know they care about a project, a funding request, accepting a report, or taking a position on something important. At the moment “I move” is uttered, all power and attention goes to the person who uttered the words. You now have the floor.
To get discussion moving on your motion, you will need someone to second it. Seconding means at least one other person agrees with your motion or at least thinks it is something the group should talk about. Without a second, your motion will die and will not be considered.
The power you have in this moment does not stop there! The person who makes a motion gets to talk about it first! This gives you an opportunity to explain why it is a good idea, why there is need for your proposal, and why your group or organization should undertake this action. Lay everything out and only when you are done will your fellow members get their say. They get to add their voice to support or oppose you. Discussion and debate takes place. Opinions are formed, minds are made up, and a decision is rendered in the form of voting. That moment when something that started as a thought in your head gets approved and becomes real is exciting and makes membership fun.
It is something only members can do. Not advisors, visitors, administrators. Not even the president of your college. Only members!
